Why a squire's website?
This website is a companion the Atlantian Order of Chivalry, maintained by His Grace, Duke Logan Ebonwoulfe. It is a who's who for the men and women who support and serve their knights, and a help for the Chivalry to identify squires who may be in other parts of the kingdom or for one reason or another are flying "under the radar" so to speak.
What exactly are you looking to put on each page?
- Your SCA name and title (lord, baron, duke, etc)
- Your heraldry, if you have one. A picture will be fine, if you do not have one, then the blazon (description) of the device will be sufficient.
- A photograph of you. Preferably in armor, without the helmet on, after all you want people to know who you are.
- The name of the knight you are squired to, and/or fostered to if applicable.
- Where you are active; barony/ canton/ shire.
- Email address, if you so desire.
- Any awards you may have within the Society. This applies to kingdom and baronial level awards as well. The dates that you received them as well. (This also applies to any awards you may have that are from other kingdoms.)
- Any service or offices that you hold, or have held within the Society. This includes champion positions, and guild officer positions.
- Noteworthy items, such as events you may have run, special tournaments you have been in, etc.
- Weekly fighter practices that you attend and where.
- Any web links you would like to have included, such as personal, guild, or household websites.
Is a squire a rank?
No. In the SCA the title of squire is more of a formal relationship between a person and a knight of the SCA. It does not carry any rank and it does not affect the Order of Precedence within the SCA. While Atlantia does not have any sumptuary laws, the usual "trappings" of a squire are a red belt, and in some areas, a silver chain, and silver spurs, as opposed to the Knight's white belt, gold chain and gold spurs. Not all knights use the red belt as a symbol for their squires, Duke Logan uses red with black embattled borders, while the late Duke Gyrth of Oldcastle used blue belts.
Since a squire is not a rank, why not do a website for all authorized fighters in Atlantia?
As of September 15th 2004, there are 790 authorized armoured fighters in Atlantia, which would make it an outrageously large website to build and maintain. Atlantian fighter information can be found here: http://mol.atlantia.sca.org/fighters.html
If my knight is not in Atlantia but I am, can I still be listed?
Yes, currently I have several squires listed whose knights do not currently reside in Atlantia.
What if my knight is no longer active?
If you are still active in the Atlantia, even if your knight is not, then you can still be listed.
What if my knight has passed away?
As personal as your oath is and as much as you wish to honor your former knight, oaths generally end when the knight has passed away.
What if I have become a master of the Laurel or Pelican?
This is rather difficult question. Several squires have become Peers in the Order's of the Pelican and Laurel. Normally when one becomes a Peer of the Society they are no longer bound by their squire oath. However there are some who still maintain a squire relationship. If a Peer wishes to remain a squire and is actively pursuing knighthood then they may still be considered a squire.
What if I am a non-fighting squire, or if am not active in the SCA anymore?
I am currently aware of a few squires who do not fight, if you are a squire and you are active in Atlantia then you are still eligible to be on the website. If you are no longer active or you are in another kingdom for a long time, then you would not be. The website is for active squires residing in Atlantia.
What if my knight is in Atlantia, but I am in another kingdom, but I am still active?
See the previous response.
What if I see some information on the site that is not correct?
If you see something that is outdated or incorrect, please let me know and I will correct it. If it is concerning another squire or a knight, such as a squire who is not listed I would also be pleased to hear the correct information.
